Monday, December 4, 2017 Robberies – Arrest: C17-271283 On December 2, 2017, at approximately 10:45 a.m., Winnipeg Police arrested a 27-year-old male in relation to a series of 4 robberies that had occurred earlier that morning. Cory Roger LEGAULT, of Winnipeg, has been charged with:  - Robbery x 4  - Wearing a Disguise with Intent to Commit a Crime Legault was detained in custody. At approximately 9:35 a.m. that morning a male suspect, with his face concealed, robbed a financial institution located in the 1500 block of Regent Ave. At approximately 9:40 a.m. that morning a male suspect attempted to rob a restaurant located in the 1500 block of Regent Ave. however he was not successful in his attempt. At approximately 10:35 a.m. a male suspect attempted to rob a store located in the 400 block of William Ave., however he was not successful. At approximately 10:45 a.m  Legault was observed in the 400 block of William Ave and placed under arrest for the noted robberies. A K-9 officer was actively involved in tracking a suspect in relation to these incidents. At the intersection of William Ave. and Harriet St. the officer was struck by an uninvolved passing motor vehicle. The officer was conveyed to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries where he was treated and released. The service dog was not injured. Weapon – Arrest: C17-271957 On December 3, 2017, officers from Division 13 went to an address in the 500 block of Alfred Ave. responding to a report of a firearm seen within the residence. Initially, 13 people were detained. After executing a search warrant police seized a sawed-off rifle, numerous airsoft guns, bear spray, a quantity of various drugs, and cash. Ultimately, 4 adults were charged in relation to this incident. Derek Paul RICHARD, 31, was charged with various firearms and drug-related offences (15 in total). He was detained in custody. John Alfred SCOTT, 25, was charged with 2 firearm-related offences and Assault Peace Officer. He was detained in custody. Two other adults were arrested on the strength of outstanding warrants. Assault – Update: C17-270028 On Friday, December 1, 2017 the Winnipeg Police Service Public Information Office released on an incident that occurred the previous day in the 400 block of William Ave. The incident was released as a homicide. Autopsy results have determined the death was not a homicide and the cause of death is not criminal in nature. As previously released: On November 30, 2017 at approximately 6:45 p.m., emergency personnel responded to a residence in the 400 block of William Ave. for the report of an injured person at this location.  Upon arrival, general patrol officers located an adult male suffering from serious injuries. Members of the Tactical Support Unit immediately provided first aid to this male. The victim was transported to hospital in critical condition. He remains in hospital at this time. Members of the Tactical Support Unit located an unconscious adult female with serious injuries at this location. She was transported to hospital in unstable condition. She was pronounced deceased a short time later. This investigation is continuing by members of the Homicide Unit. Sunday, December 3, 2017 Disturbance: C17-271303 On December 2, 2017, at approximately 11:10 a.m., Winnipeg Police responded to a business in the 800 block of Main Street regarding a male who was causing a disturbance and armed with a weapon. Police were told that the male had been removed from a neighbouring business a short time earlier, also for brandishing a weapon.  Bystanders were able to disarm the male and restrain him prior to police arrival. Officers arriving at the scene took control of the male, however, the subject experienced a medical emergency. Officers administered first aid, and contacted EMS. Responding members from the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service continued to administer treatment.  The subject, a male in his 30's, was transported to hospital, where he remains in critical condition. Investigators believe this male had interactions with a number of people in the area prior to police arrival. Saturday, December 2, 2017 Assault Peace Officer – Arrest: C17-270271 Friday, December 2, 2017, at approximately 3:30 a.m., a Winnipeg Police officer was attending to his personal vehicle parked near Graham Ave. and Garry St. after completing his shift. Once near the vehicle he saw a male peering through the window into his vehicle. The officer identified himself as a Police Officer and attempted to take hold of the suspect. At this time the suspect produced a knife and stabbed the officer in the arm. The officer again identified himself as a Police Officer and began to chase the suspect while calling 911 from his cell phone. Responding police units arrested a suspect a short distance away. The injured officer was treated in hospital and released. Corey Clifford WHITFORD, 45, of Winnipeg, has been charged with the following offences:    - Assault Peace Officer with a Weapon    - Assault with a Weapon    - Possess Weapon    - Escape Lawful Custody    - Fail to Comply Conditions (Undertaking)    - Warrant of Arrest x 5 The accused was detained in custody. Motor Vehicle Collision – Public Assistance Requested: C17-270297 On December 1, 2017 the Winnipeg Police Service provided information on a Motor Vehicle Collision that had occurred at the intersection of Main St. and Anderson Ave. at approximately 5:55 a.m.  A female pedestrian was struck and killed in the incident. Investigators believe a second pedestrian may have been crossing the street at the time and would like to speak with this individual. Investigators are requesting that anyone who may have witnessed this incident or may have information regarding the collision contact the Traffic unit at 204-986-6271 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477). Sexual Assault – Investigation: C17-269774 On November 30, 2017, Winnipeg Police responded to a report of a sexual assault that had occurred at approximately 9:30 a.m., in the 300 block of Pritchard Ave. A female resident in her 20's answered a knock at her door. She was confronted by 3 males, one armed with a handgun that entered the residence and sexually assaulted her. The suspects had disguised their appearance and no descriptions are available. The incident does not appear to be random in nature. This investigation is continuing by members of the Sex Crimes Unit. Friday, December 1, 2017 Further to the statement provided by Chief Danny Smyth on Wednesday, November 29, the Winnipeg Police Service is providing the following information regarding officers who have either faced Impaired Driving charges, or are currently on charge for these offences. Since 2005, 12 officers have been charged with impaired driving related offences (the officer arrested on November 20, 2017 by the RCMP in the Headingley area has not yet been charged). A year-by-year breakdown can be found on the attached chart.  The chart indicates the number of officers charged in a given year, compared with all impaired driving charges laid by the Winnipeg Police Service. The Independent Investigations Unit of Manitoba was notified in each case since they have been active.  However, the current Winnipeg Police Board policy is open to interpretation as to what events or incidents require the Chief to notify the Board.  Going forward, the Chief will work with members of the Board to establish a policy for notification. Currently oncharge for an impaired driving offence: Jason Garrett, a 28-year member of the Service, arrested by the RCMP in February 2017. Andrew Tighe, a 23-year member of the Service, arrested by the WPS in June 2017. Mike Hawley, an 8-year member of the Service, arrested by the WPS in November 2017. Justin Holz, an 8-year member of the Service, arrested by the WPS in October 2017. As previously released: On December 1, 2017 at approximately 6:00 a.m., emergency services personnel responded to the report of a motor vehicle collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian at the intersection of Main St. and Anderson Ave. An adult female in her 80's was transported to hospital in critical condition where she remains at this time. Friday, December 1, 2017 Impaired Driving - Arrest: C17-266421 On Monday, November 26, 2017 an off duty Winnipeg Police Service member was arrested in the West Kildonan area for Care and Control of a Motor Vehicle While Impaired. He was later released on a Promise to Appear. Michael Richard HAWLEY, 49-years-old of Winnipeg has been charged with Care and Control of a Motor Vehicle and Refuse Breathalyzer. In addition, he has been charged with Unsafe Storage of a Firearm and Unsafe Storage of a Magazine under the Consolidated Firearms Act. Motorists can expect to see an increased presence of police officers on Winnipeg roadways, enforcing Impaired Driving legislation. Impaired driving is the number one criminal cause of death in Canada, yet it is 100% preventable. We take this opportunity to remind citizens that we all have an important role to play in preventing impaired driving and the all too often human costs often associated with this crime. Our message is simple, if you choose to drink or do drugs, DON'T DRIVE.
