Fatal Fire Investigation C16-240934
On November 17, 2016, at approximately 2:00 a.m., Winnipeg Police and Fire Paramedic Services attended to a report of a working fire in the 200 block of Lynbrook Drive.
Emergency personnel located a male victim within the residence. He was transported to hospital in critical condition but succumbed to his injuries.
This investigation is continuing by members of the Arson Unit. No additional information is available at this time.
Child Abuse Imagery Arrest R16-17658
On October 17, 2016 the National Centre for Child Protection was alerted to the fact that images of child sexual abuse had been uploaded to an IP address in Winnipeg.
The Winnipeg Police Service Internet Child Exploitation Unit was alerted and entered into an investigation. Police were able to locate the computer through the IP address, identify the user and seize the computer in question.
On October 6, 2016 a search warrant was executed for the contents of the computer. As a result, hundreds of images of Child Pornography were retrieved. The majority of these images involved girls between 2 - 13 years of age.
On November 15, 2016, Joseph Higgins, 31-years-old, of Winnipeg was arrested and charged with the following offences:
- Possession of Child Pornography
- Make Available Child Pornography
He was remanded into custody.
Commercial Break & Enter Arrest: R16-87939
After a lengthy investigation members of the East District Crime Unit arrested a 34-year-old male in relation to a series of Commercial Break and Enters.
On November 15, 2016, Ante MILAS of Winnipeg was charged with 21 separate offences including; Break Enter and Theft, Possess Proceeds of Property Obtained by Crime, Possess Weapon, Theft of Motor Vehicle and Fail to Comply with Recognizance.
Milas has been linked to a series of incidents that occurred between October 28 and November 14, 2016 where eleven businesses in the East District area of the city were broken into. In total, almost $75,000 worth of property was stolen. In addition, the suspect caused thousands of dollars' worth of property damage during the break-ins. In one particular incident the suspect attempted to steal an ATM machine from a credit union on St. Marys Road, causing approximately $80,000 in damages.
Milas was detained in custody.
