HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION ARREST C13-61411
As previously released- On Tuesday, April 2, 2013 shortly after 4:00 p.m., Winnipeg Police Service members along with emergency services responders were dispatched to the 500 block of Langside Street for the report of gunshots.
Upon arrival officers located an adult male and female, both suffering from wounds consistent with having been shot with a firearm. Nigel DIXON, 20 years succumbed to his injuries while the female victim was treated for non-life threatening injuries.
Police believe that the victims were walking in the area when they were approached by a group. The suspects accused the victims of being gang members. The victims denied any gang involvement and walked away to avoid any further confrontation. While the victims were walking away, it is believed that they were followed by the suspect group. The victims were then fired upon as they attempted to get away. Injuries to the victims support the fact that they were attempting to flee from the suspect group when they were shot. Police believe that this was a case of mistaken identity as the victims are not affiliated with any gangs.
A Canada-wide warrant for 2nd Degree Murder and Attempt Murder was obtained for the arrest of an eighteen-year-old male.
On January 17, 2014, investigators requested the public and the media's assistance in locating the male.
On March 13, 2014, the 18 year-old male suspect was located in Vancouver, British Columbia and was taken into custody without incident by Vancouver Police Department members on the strength of the warrant.
On March 15th, 2014, the 18 year-old male was returned to Winnipeg and subsequently detained at the Manitoba Youth Centre.
The Winnipeg Police Service would like to thank the public and the media for their assistance.
STRONG-ARM ROBBERY- ARRESTS C14-54234
On March 15, 2014, shortly after 10:30 p.m., Winnipeg Police Service Uniform Members responded to the rear of a shopping mall within the 300 block of Portage Avenue for a report of a male being assaulted by three suspects.
Upon arrival officers located an injured male on the ground and three individuals were seen leaving the area.
The 38-year-old male victim, who had sustained serious upper body injuries, was transported from the scene in non-life-threating injuries.
A number of units, including Air1 attended to the area in search of the suspects. Shortly before 10:40 p.m., two suspects were located in the area of Edmonton Street and Graham Avenue, while the third suspect was taken into custody a short time later, within the 300 block of Portage Avenue.
A recovery of the victim's property was made.
As a result of their alleged involvement, the following individuals have been charged with Robbery:
Elizier KAKEGAMIC, 42 years of Winnipeg
Gary Ben Friesen, 25 years of Steinbach
Billie Jo COOKE, 25 years of Manitoba
COOKE has also been charged with warrant for arrest for fail to comply probation order and breach of probation.
They have been remanded into custody.
MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISION- ARREST C14-53783
On March 15, 2014 shortly before 6:00 a.m. Emergency Services Responders were dispatched to the area of St. Vital Road and Dunkirk Drive for a report of single motor vehicle collision that had just occurred.
Upon arrival officers located a Honda Accord which had collided with a parked Chevy Cobalt, causing the Cobalt to be pushed up onto the snow bank. Both vehicles sustained extensive damage as a result of the collision.
Four adult passengers were transported from the scene with non-life-threatening injuries. The male driver of the Honda was identified and taken into custody.
An 18-year-old male is facing the following charges:
- Drive while ability impaired causing bodily harm
- Driving with more than 80 mgs of alcohol in blood.
He has been released on a promise to appear in court at a later date.
STABBING C14-55028
On March 17, 2014, at approximately 3:15 a.m. Emergency Services Responders were summoned to the area of Beverly Street and Ellice Avenue for a report of male who had been stabbed.
Upon arrival officers located an 18-year-old male victim with upper body injuries. The victim was transported from the scene with non-life-threatening injuries.
A short time later officers received reports of a second male victim, who had attended to the area of Maryland Street and Ellice Avenue with injuries consistent with being stabbed.
This 18-year-old male victim was also transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening upper-body-injuries.
At this point, the investigation has revealed that the two male victims were in the company of female in the area of Maryland Street and Ellice Avenue when they got into an argument with a group of unknown males and females. The victims and female proceeded to leave and were followed to by the group to the area of the 400 block of Agnes Avenue where they were confronted and assaulted.
No suspect information is available at this time.
