Winnipeg Police Service News Release

SUSPICIOUS CIRCUMSTANCES     C12-57700
On Saturday, March 31st, 2012 shortly after 10:00 a.m. Winnipeg Police Service uniform members were dispatched to the rear of an apartment complex located within the 700 block of Notre Dame Avenue for a report of suspicious circumstances. 
 
Upon arrival, officers located evidence near a garbage bin.  Efforts are continuing to determine the nature of this discovery.  
 
Members of the Winnipeg Police Service Forensic Identification Unit are currently on scene. 
 
This investigation is continuing and information will be provided as it becomes available.

Winnipeg Police Service News Release

 

  March 31st, 2012

 
 
STABBING INVESTIGATION               C12-57325
On March 31st, 2012 just after 9:30 p.m. Winnipeg Police Service members responded to the area of the 400 block of Boyd Avenue for a report of two injured males outside of that location. 
 
Upon arrival officers learned that both males had sustained stab wounds to their upper bodies.  Paramedics attended and transported the injured males to the hospital.
 
At this stage in the investigation officers have learned that the two male victims, aged 19 and 23 years, were in the area of Salter Street and Boyd Avenue when they were assaulted.
 
No arrests have been made. 
 
This investigation is continuing by members of the Division 13 Crime Unit. 
 
 
COMMERICAL ROBBERY                                       C12-57373
On March 30th, 2012 at approximately 10:45 p.m. Winnipeg Police Service members were dispatched to a restaurant within the 700 block of Portage Avenue for a report of a commercial robbery that had just occurred. 
 
Upon arrival officers met with a female employee and learned that a lone male suspect entered the restaurant and immediately attended to the front till area and where a knife was produced. The suspect demanded and received an undisclosed amount of cash before leaving the scene.
  
The suspect is described as: 
 
-       Male, approximately 25 to 30 years of age, wearing a baseball cap and blue jeans.
 
This investigation is continuing by members of the Major Crimes Unit. 
 
 
COMMERICAL ROBBERY                                       C12-57374
On March 30th, 2012 at approximately 10:45 p.m. Winnipeg Police Service members were dispatched to a restaurant in the area of Portage Avenue and Home Street for a report of a commercial robbery that had just occurred. 
 
Upon arrival officers met with the 22 year old female victim and learned that a lone suspect armed with a knife had entered the premise and attended to counter area. The suspect demanded cash but fled the restaurant before receiving anything. 
 
The suspect is described as: 
 
-       Male, approximately 6'0" tall with a stocky build and short black hair. He was wearing a hoodie, blue jeans and runners.
 
This investigation is continuing by members of the Major Crimes Unit. Anyone who has any information regarding this incident is asked to contact 204-986-6219 or CrimeStoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).
 
 
IMPAIRED DRIVING- ARREST                                C12-57550
On March 31st, 2012 shortly before 3:00 a.m. two separate calls were received from members of the public regarding a possible impaired driver operating a truck erratically within the Mission Industrial area. Descriptions of the vehicle and the male driver were provided.
 
As a result, Winnipeg Police Service East District units were dispatched to the area and at approximately 3:25 a.m. a patrolling unit observed the Dodge Ram truck travelling in the area of Regent Avenue and Lagimodiere Boulevard. 
 
A traffic stop was initiated in the area of Lagimodiere Boulevard and Dugald Road however the driver failed to stop and immediately accelerated, speeding away from the patrol unit. The truck proceeded through a red light and drove at excessive speeds northbound on Lagimodiere Boulevard.  Officers engaged in a brief traffic pursuit. 
 
The suspect vehicle attempted to negotiate a turn onto Warman Road when it lost control and crashed into the ditch. Officers attended to this area and removed the driver from the vehicle where he was taken into custody without incident.     
The suspect male was not injured as a result of the collision.     
 
A 20 year old male from Winnipeg will be facing the following offences:
 
-       Drive without a licence - with an invalid licence
-       Breach of probation
-       Flight from police officer
-       Failure to provide blood sample and impaired driving of a motor vehicle
 
He has been released to appear in court at a later date. 
 
 
COMMERCIAL ROBBERY- ARREST                     C12-57402
On March 31st, 2012 shortly before 11:30 p.m. Winnipeg Police Service members were dispatched to a restaurant within the 1100 block of Main Street for a report of a commercial robbery that had just occurred.
 
Upon arrival officers learned that a suspect male had entered the restaurant and attended to the till area where he demanded and received an undisclosed amount of cash. 
 
The suspect fled and police were notified. 
 
A number of units including a canine unit attended to the area.  At approximately 11:45 p.m. a suspect male was taken into custody without incident near the intersection of Arlington Street and Mountain Avenue 
 
The investigation is continuing and at this time formal charges have not been laid.

MISSING PERSONS– SIDOTI SIBLINGS   C12-50586 & C12-45644
The Winnipeg Police Service is continuing to request the public's assistance in locating missing siblings, Willow SIDOTI, 11 years old, and Nicholas SIDOTI, 9 years old. Nicholas and Willow were last seen on March 21st, 2012 at approximately 5:30 p.m. in the Point Douglas area.
 
          
 
 
Nicholas is described as Aboriginal, 5' tall, approximately 105 pounds with a thin build, medium length black hair and brown eyes. SIDOTI was last seen wearing black sweats, black hoodie with grey guitars on it, dark runners and carrying a black/ blue backpack.
 
Willow is described as Aboriginal, 4'7" tall, approximately 105 pounds with short blonde hair. She was last seen wearing a blue shirt, black leather jacket, black tights and black runners.
 
Anyone with information regarding the SIDOTI children's whereabouts is asked to contact the Winnipeg Police Service Missing Persons Unit at 986-6250.

VEHICLE THEFT- UPDATE ARREST           C12-39529
As previously released, on March 4th, 2012, at approximately 3:00 a.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to the area of Corydon Avenue and Arbuthnot Street for a report of a stolen taxi cab.
 
The investigation revealed that a 25 year old male driver left his vehicle (cab) unattended for a period of time while parked outside of a convenience store.  Upon exiting the store, his cab was missing and assumed stolen.  Police were notified. 
 
The stolen cab was recovered abandoned in the area of the 800 block of Lorette Avenue by members of the Canine Unit.
 
On March 29th, 2012 Winnipeg Police Service released photos of a person of interest and requested the public's assistance in identifying the male.  As a result members of the Division 16 Crime Unit received information on the male's identity. 
 
On March 30th, 2012, a 24 year old male from Winnipeg was arrested without incident.  He was released on an appearance notice and will be facing one count of theft under $5000.

VEHICLE THEFT INVESTIGATION C12-39529
On March 4, 2012, at approximately 3:00 a.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to the area of Corydon Avenue and Arbuthnot Street as a result of a stolen taxi cab.
 
The investigation revealed that a 25 year old male driver left his vehicle (cab) unattended for a period of time while parked outside of a convenience store. Upon exiting the store, his cab was missing and assumed stolen. It was at this time WPS members were notified.
 
The stolen cab is described as a: Green, 1999, Toyota Camry which was recovered abandoned in the area of the 800 block of Lorette Avenue by members of the Canine Unit.
 
The investigation continued by members of the District 6 Crime Unit.
 
Investigators are requesting the public's assistance in identifying the following person of interest.

GROW OPERATION – ARREST C12-55817
On March 27, 2012, District 2 Uniform Patrol members entered into in a drug investigation involving a residence located in the area of the 1900 block of Logan Avenue.
 
On March 28, 2012, at approximately 6:30 p.m., District 2 members with the assistance of the Tactical Support Team and Drug Unit executed a Controlled Drug and Substance Act Search Warrant. As a result, a marihuana grow operation was located within the residence which consisted of the following:
 
·        356 marihuana plants – estimated street value $398,000.00
·        Grow operation equipment – estimated value $7500.00
 
A short time after executing the warrant, a 54 year old male was arrested at the scene and taken into custody. He is facing the following offences:
 
·        Possessing substance for purpose of trafficking
·        Production of controlled substance
 
He was released on a Promise to Appear.

FRAUD ARREST R11-114933
Between March 24, 2008 and December 11, 2011, a female suspect defrauded four victims out of a quantity of money after responding to a variety of online classified ads.
 
The suspect promised to sell the victims tickets to various concerts and sporting events, however after receiving the agreed amount of money, she failed to forward the promised tickets to the victims.
 
The incidents are as follows:
 
·        March 24, 2008 – concert - $400.00
·        November 12, 2008 – sporting event - $375.00
·        Between November 11 and 13, 2011 – concert and sporting event - $730.00
·        Between November 30 and December 11, 2011 – sporting event - $260.00
 
As a result of a lengthy investigation by members of the Winnipeg Police Service Commercial Crime Unit, Anita Lorraine ABREY, 37 years was identified, arrested and charged with the following offenses due to her alleged involvement:
 
·        Fraud Under $5000.00 x 4
 
She has been detained.
 
 
COMMERCIAL ROBBERY ARRESTS C12-55170
On March 27, 2012, at approximately 3:00 p.m., several uniform patrol units responded to a stabbing incident at a business in the area of the 2100 block of Pembina Highway.
 
The investigation has revealed that a 39 year old male Loss Prevention Officer, through the course of his duties, observed two female suspects steal a quantity of merchandise and exit the store, making no attempt to pay for the items.
 
The LPO subsequently approached the suspects at which time they became combative. It was at this time both suspects produced a knife, one of which assaulted the LPO causing an injury. Both suspects fled the area on foot with the stolen property.
 
Due to the efforts of District 6 uniform patrol members, both suspects were located and arrested a short distance away. They were conveyed to the District 6 Station for further processing by Detectives.
 
One of the suspects became belligerent and continued to yell and swear at officers.
 
As the investigation progressed, officers discovered that the two suspects had been involved in a previous robbery incident. It was learned that the two suspects confronted a 24 year old female in the area of Pembina Highway and Markham Road. One of the suspects produced a knife and attempted to stab and rob the victim of her purse. The victim was not injured and no property was stolen. The suspects fled the area.    
 
Jenny Lee LANDRY, 25 years has been charged and detained due to her alleged involvement: Robbery with a Weapon, Aggravated Assault of Peace Officer, Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose and Fail to Comply Conditions Undertaking.
 
Tamara Elizabeth SMITH, 25 years has been charged with the following offences due to her alleged involvement: Robbery with a Weapon x 2. She has been detained.
 
 
STRONG ARM ROBBERY C12-54912
On March 27, 2012, at approximately 5:00 a.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service were notified of a robbery incident that occurred in the area of Pacific Avenue and Isabel Street.
 
It was determined that a 19 year old male victim was walking in the area when he was approached by an unknown male requesting a cigarette. It was at this time several other male suspects approached the victim from behind and proceeded to assault him. Injuries were sustained.
 
The victim was robbed of his shoes, clothing items, wallet and a quantity of cash.   
 
The suspects are described as: Males, Aboriginal in appearance, between 17-20 years of age.
 
The investigation is continuing by members of the Division 11 Crime Unit. Anyone with information regarding this matter is asked to contact police at 204-986-6668 or CrimeStoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).

HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION- UPDATE C12-53287
As previously released, on Saturday, March 24th, 2012 at approximately 10:50 a.m., Winnipeg Police Service Division 13 uniform members were dispatched to an apartment complex within the 1200 block of Jefferson Avenue to check on the well-being of a resident. 
 
Upon arrival, officers entered the suite and located two deceased individuals. 
 
The investigation has been treated as a domestic related incident.  The two deceased have been identified as: Renelle NONATO, 28 years and Julito NONATO, 32 years.  
 
Family notifications have been completed.
 
No further information will be released regarding this matter.

FRAUD PREVENTION TIPS
 
As part of Fraud Awareness Month, the Winnipeg Police Service Commercial Crime Unit would like to remind the public and merchants of the importance of being aware of current scams and other fraudulent activity that has occurred in Winnipeg and surrounding areas.
 
Citizens and employees are encouraged to educate themselves to avoid becoming a victim of crime. "Recognize it, Report it and Stop it". 
 
The Competition Bureau of Canada has launched "The Little Black Book of Scams". This compact and easy-to-use reference guide is filled with information people can use to protect themselves against a variety of common scams.
 
Consumers and businesses can consult the book to avoid falling victim to internet scams, fake lotteries, romance scams, and other schemes currently used to defraud Canadians of their money or personal information.
 
The booklet offers information on how scams work and how to recognize them, as well as practical tips on how consumers can protect themselves.  It also offers a step-by-step guide for victims to reduce their losses and avoid becoming repeat victims.

The Competition Bureau as an independent law enforcement agency ensures that Canadian businesses and consumers prosper in a competitive and innovative marketplace.
 
Anyone who has been the victim of any of the above mentioned scams or any other scam should report the matter to police by attending in person to any police station.

WINNIPEG POLICE SERVICE- COMMUNITY CONSULTATION
The Winnipeg Police Service will be hosting two Community Consultations regarding the proposal to close the Police Service Centres located at 1400 Henderson and 1085 St-Mary's Road. 
 
Representatives from the Winnipeg Police Service will be in attendance at both meetings.
 
The consultations will take place as listed below:
 
Wednesday March 28th, 7:30 pm, at the Bronx Community Centre located at 720 Henderson Highway. 
 
Thursday March 29th, 7:30 pm at the Dakota Collegiate located at 661 Dakota Street.
 
Members of the public are invited to attend.  
 
 
ASSAULT WITH A WEAPON – ARRESTS C12-53860
On March 25, 2012, at approximately 8:20 a.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to the first 100 block of Polson Avenue regarding a fight in progress.
 
The investigation has revealed that as a result of an ongoing dispute between a 21 year old female and 22 year old female, a physical confrontation occurred in front of the previously mentioned address. Two other females intervened, (21 years and 24 years) resulting in injuries to all parties.
 
Officers recovered two knives at the scene of the incident.
 
All four females are facing charges, some of which include: Assault with a Weapon, Assault and Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose.  
 
Interviews are ongoing involving investigators form the District 3 Crime Unit.
 
 
WEAPON – ARREST C12-53841
On March 25, 2012, at approximately 7:10 a.m., officers attended to the area of the 400 block of Elgin Avenue regarding the sound of shots.
 
Attending members observed damage to a window of a residence, however no injuries were reported.
 
Members of the Major Crimes Unit continued with the investigation. It has since been determined that a firearm discharged occurred from within the residence.
 
A search warrant was obtained which resulted in the seizure of a firearm, partial firearm and ammunition.
 
Matthew Joseph HOLLOHAN, 28 years has been charged with the following offences due to his alleged involvement:
 
  • Possession of Firearm, etc, while prohibited x 2
  • Breach Firearms Regulation
  • Knowledge of Unauthorized Possession of Firearm x 2
  • Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose
  • Possession of Prohibited or Restricted Firearm/ammunition
He was detained at the Provincial Remand Centre.
