RESIDENTIAL BREAK & ENTER – C14-33183
Recently the Winnipeg Police Service received the report of a residential break & enter that occurred in the area of Mountain Avenue and McPhillips Street.
 
Officers met with homeowner who advised that her home had been broken into.  Along with personal property, a substantial amount of money was stolen.
 
To date investigators have been unsuccessful in identifying the suspect(s) responsible.
 
The investigation is continuing by members of the District 3 Crime Unit.  Anyone with information regarding this incident or the identity of the suspect(s) is asked to contact investigators at (204) 986-2848 or CrimeStoppers at (204) 786-TIPS (8477).

RESIDENTIAL ROBBERY – C14-38341
On February 21, 2014 members of the Winnipeg Police Service received the report of a residential robbery.
 
Officers met with the female victim who advised that she had been home alone at her residence on Regent Avenue during the afternoon hours.  It was at this time a lone suspect was able to gain entry to the home.  When confronted by the victim the suspect assaulted her and then fled on foot.
 
Suspect description: Caucasian male, late 20's, 5'9" - 5'10" tall with a medium build, brown eyes, scruffy brown and orange coloured facial hair.  He was wearing oversized black hoodie with pocket in front, old blue jeans and beige work boots.

MARCH IS FRAUD AWARENESS MONTH

 

March is Fraud Awareness Month, and this March celebrates the 10th Anniversary of this designation.  In conjunction with other agencies from the community, the Winnipeg Police Service will be participating in events to help educate citizens on how they can protect themselves from fraud.

These events include:

Public information booth – March 8th & 9th - Polo Park Mall, Centre Court

Twitter conversation - March 19th, 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., #WPSFraudSquad

"Shred It" Event - March 31st, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at St. Vital Mall parking lot outside Silver City.  A maximum of two bags or boxes per person to this FREE event please.

Preventing fraud takes an awareness to recognize when an offering is false, in knowing how to protect your personal information, and in how to prevent from falling to pressure tactics from con artists. These events are designed to provide education and reduce losses to involving fraud; losses which totaled almost $100 million for Canadians in 2012.

The Winnipeg Police Service would like to remind citizens of the following:

  • Never send money to anyone you only know from an unsolicited phone call or email
  • Never give out sensitive personal information online or over the phone
  • Research any request for money before making a commitment
  • Find a "Fraud Buddy" – someone whose advice you respect – and run any request for money by them before you commit to it.
  • Never feel pressured to make a quick decision, and
  • If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

THINK TWICE ON THIN ICE
 
 
Today, the Winnipeg Police Service, along with the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service, RCMP, Coalition for Safer Waters, Canadian Red Cross, University of Manitoba and CTV will be participating in a "Think Twice on Thin Ice" Public Service Announcement. The event will air tonight at 6:00 p.m. on CTV News Winnipeg. Members of the public are encouraged to watch. 
 
The Winnipeg Police Service River Patrol Unit would like to remind the public that as warmer weather conditions approach, thin ice and open water will be present on our rivers and retention ponds.  Waterways will be considered unsafe as ice thickness can be very unpredictable.
 
Parents, guardians and teachers are asked to remind children of the dangers involving cold water and thin ice.  This is an extremely dangerous time as open water on the rivers is swift and very cold.
 
Members of the public are asked to refrain from venturing near any bodies of water as rivers banks become slippery and very hazardous.

COMMERCIAL ROBBERY – ARRESTS   C14-41915
On February 26, 2014 at approximately 11:20 p.m., two females entered a taxi cab while in the area of the 400 block of Kennedy Street. Once inside, the females requested that they be driven to the area of Logan Avenue and Keewatin Street.
 
While on route, an argument erupted at which time one of the females threatened to harm the driver. As a result of the threat, the cab driver exited the vehicle while in the area of Notre Dame Avenue and Balmoral Street. Both females drove off with the cab, leaving the cab driver behind.
 
Police were notified of the incident and attended the area. Officers observed the stolen cab being operated in the area of Alexander Avenue and Ellen Street. The stolen vehicle continued on and eventually collided with a snow bank in the 200 block of Isabel Street.
 
Both females were arrested.
 
Ansley HENDERSON, 22 years-old has been charged with the following offences due to her alleged involvement:
 
Robbery
Uttering threats – cause death or bodily harm
Driving while ability impaired
Driving with more than 80 mgs of alcohol in blood
Fail to comply with probation order
 
Britney BEARDY 24 years-old has been charged with the following offence due to her alleged involvement:
 
Robbery
 
Both were detained at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.

SUSPICIOUS MALE   C14-40396
On February 24, 2014 at approximately 7:30 p.m., a 13-year-old male was walking in the area of Charles Street and Redwood Avenue when he was approached by an unknown male in a vehicle.
 
The suspect offered the young male candy and a ride at which time both were declined. The male made his way home and told a parent what had taken place. Police were subsequently notified.
 
The suspect is described as: Caucasian, male, in his 50's, white short curly hair and wearing a dark jacket.
 
The suspect vehicle is described as: small, black, two-door, older model.  
 
Division 13 Detectives continue to investigate. Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact investigators at 204-986-2848.
 
 
STOLEN VEHICLE – ARREST   C14-40605
On February 22, 2014 a Toyota Corolla was stolen in Regina, Saskatchewan and driven to Winnipeg.
 
On February 25, 2014 at approximately 1:20 a.m., Patrol members observed the stolen vehicle being operated in an unsafe manner in the area of Mountain Avenue and Salter Street. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle however the lone male suspect refused and continued driving in a reckless manner.
 
While travelling at a high rate of speed, the suspect collided with a taxi cab near the Arlington Bridge. Damage was caused, however no injuries were sustained.
 
The suspect fled the stolen vehicle on foot at which time members of the WPS Canine Unit were deployed. The suspect was tracked by Canine with the assistance of Patrol members to a residence located on Alfred Avenue.
 
Skyler ALEXSON, 20 years-oldhas been charged with the following offences due to his alleged involvement:
 
Possession of Property Obtained by Crime
Flight while Pursued by Peace Officer
Dangerous Operation of Motor Vehicle
HTA – Fail to Leave Particulars re: damage
Fail to Comply with Probation Order
Fail to Comply with Conditions Undertaking x 2
 
He was detained.

SUDDEN DEATH INVESTIGATION   C14-39726
On February 23, 2014 at 5:45 p.m., officers responded to the report of an injured male being located at the rear of a residence located in the 600 block of Harbison Avenue East.
 
The male was confirmed deceased and positively identified as a 43 year-old-male. 

 

At this time, the investigation has revealed that the male had been drinking with several other people at a residence nearby. At one point during the gathering he became verbally aggressive toward other partygoers. Due to his behaviour, he was asked to leave resulting in a minor physical altercation. The male was forced out of the residence.
 
It appears that the male collapsed nearby after which time police and other emergency personnel were summoned.
 
Members of the Homicide Unit are investigating and conducting numerous interviews. No charges have been laid at this time.
 
The cause of death has not yet been confirmed. A post mortem is pending.

WARRANT ARREST – C14-83291
On February 20, 2014 the Manitoba Integrated Warrant Apprehension Unit received information from the Targeted Offenders Section of the Edmonton Police Service that one of their 'Most Wanted' was currently living in Winnipeg.  The 40 outstanding warrants were in relation to the following:

  • 2 violence related offences
  • 15 Breach of Court Orders
  • 8 Fail to Appear charges
  • 3 Trafficking offences
  • 5 Weapons related offences
  • 3 Possession of a Firearm Contrary to Order
  • 4 Proceeds of Crime offences

On February 21, 2014 officers located and arrested the male on the strength of the warrants without incident.
 
Che Dean LAMPMAN 33 years was detained at the Provincial Remand Centre where he awaits his return to Edmonton.

The Winnipeg Police Service is requesting the public's assistance in locating 15 year old Devon Meyer.  Meyer was last seen in the south end of the city on the evening of February 17.
 
Meyer is described as: Caucasian, 5'8" tall, with a stocky build and short light brown hair.  He was last seen wearing a Bomber style camouflage jacket, blue jeans, black boots and was carrying a black backpack. 
 
Winnipeg Police are concerned for Meyer's wellbeing.  Anyone with information as to Meyer's whereabouts are asked to contact the Winnipeg Police Service Missing Persons Unit at (204) 986-6250.

COMMERCIAL BREAK & ENTER ARREST – C13-220113
Between October 23, 2013 and February 9, 2014 the Winnipeg Police Service became aware of several commercial break & enters and stolen vehicles (SV) within and around the city with three suspects involved.  They include:

  • 1st 100 block of Hutchings Street  (Winnipeg) on October 23, 2013
  • 1100 block of Fife Street (Winnipeg) between October 25 & 26, 2013
  • 1500 block of Inkster Boulevard (Winnipeg) on October 26, 2013
  • 200 block of Station Street (Morris, Mb) on October 26, 2013
  • 1400 block of Highway #75 (Ritchot, Mb) on October 26, 2013
  • 1st 100 block of Hutchings Street  (Winnipeg) between October 30 & 31, 2013
  • 1500 block of Inkster Boulevard (Winnipeg) on November 1, 2013
  • 1100 block of Fife Street (Winnipeg) between November 1 & 2, 2013
  • 1500 block of Inkster Boulevard (Winnipeg) on November 10, 2013
  • 100 block of Path 52 West (Steinbach, Mb) on November 11, 2013
  • 200 block of Oak Point Highway (Winnipeg) between January 10 & 11,2014 (SV)
  • 1st 100 block of Inksbrook Drive (Winnipeg) on January 24, 2014 (SV)
  • 2100 block of Brookside Boulevard (Winnipeg) on February 9, 2014 (SV)

On February 17th, 2014 at approximately 3:30 a.m. a vehicle in the 1600 block of Inkster Boulevard was broken into and items stolen.

At approximately 3:45 am two vehicles in the 1600 block of Inkster Boulevard were broken into.  Property was stolen from one of the vehicles.

At approximately 4:15 am a vehicle was stolen from the 300 block of Oak Point Highway.  The suspect drove the vehicle to the area of Leila Avenue and Monsey Street where it was abandoned.  Police were notified and attended.  The suspect's lone footprints were evident in the freshly fallen snow and officers were able to follow them to the 700 block of Leila Avenue where they located and arrested the suspect without incident.

Damage and property stolen from within the vehicles is in excess of $13,000.00.  All stolen vehicles were recovered.
 
Brant Rheal BLANCHETTE 44 years of Winnipeg has been charged with numerous property related offences for his alleged involvement.

He was detained at the Provincial Remand Centre.
 
The second suspect, Miles MELQUIST 22 years of Winnipeg, was identified during the investigation and a warrant of arrest was issued for his alleged involvement in these incidents.
 
On February 19, 2014 MELQUIST was located and arrested without incident in the area of Selkirk Street and Salter Avenue.
 
He has been detained at the Provincial Remand Centre.
 
On February 20, 2014 the third suspect, a 21 year old male from Winnipeg, was located and arrested for his alleged involvement.  He is facing charges of Break Enter & Commit – Place & Mischief Under x 2.
 
He was released via a Promise to Appear.
 
 
RESIDENTIAL ROBBERY ARREST – C14-31024
On February 11, 2014 shortly after 11:30 p.m. members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to the 1st 100 block of Matheson Avenue for the report of a residential robbery.
 
Officers arrived to find the residents of the home holding one of the suspects for police.
 
The suspect, who was injured during the incident, was arrested.  He was transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
 
A 24 year old resident sustained serious injury during the incident and also required medical treatment.  His 22 year old brother suffered minor injury.
 
The investigation continued by members of the Major Crime Unit.
 
It was learned that one of the residents had posted an advertisement on the internet for the sale of some jewellery.  The owner, along with his brother and two cousins were home when the suspect attended to the residence to view the items for sale.  Once the jewellery was seen, the suspect alerted his three armed accomplices who then entered the residence with the intent of robbing the occupants of the jewellery.  A struggle between three of the residents and the suspects ensued.  It was during this altercation that the victims and accused were injured.  The three accomplices fled prior to police arrival.
 
On February 18, 2014 the accused, Shaquille Demitrias Dominique MACFARLANE 20 years, was charged with numerous offences for his alleged involvement.
 
He was detained at the Provincial Remand Centre.
 
The investigation is continuing by members of the Major Crimes Unit. Anyone with information regarding this matter or the identity of the outstanding suspect(s) is asked to contact investigators at (204) 986-6219 or Crime Stoppers at (204) 786-TIPS (8477).
 
 
RESIDENTIAL BREAK & ENTER ARRESTS – C14-36825
Between December 20, 2013 and February 11, 2014 members of the East District Crime Unit investigated 14 residential break and enter incidents.  They include:

  • 1071 Brazier Avenue on 2013-12-20
  • 86 Evenlea Walk on 2013-12-20
  • 1204 De Graff Place on 2013-12-23
  • 233 Kingsford Avenue on 2014-01-07
  • 182 De Graff Place on 2014-01-07
  • 245 Arby Bay on 2014-01-12
  • 1121 Rothesay Street on 2014-01-14
  • 602 Cedarcrest Driveon 2014-01-16
  • 614 Edison Avenue on 2014-01-16
  • 82 Pinecrest Bay on 2014-01-22
  • 10 Roselawn Bay between 2014-01-21/24
  • 363 Leighton Avenue between 2014-02-05/06
  • 384 Paufeld Drive on 2014-02-11
  • 306 Edelweiss Crescent on 2014-02-11

On February 19, 2014 a residence in the 200 block of McKay Avenue was broken into.  Police were contacted and the two suspects were arrested in the area.

During these incidents over $21,000.00 of property, including electronics, jewellery, cash & credit cards was stolen.  Later, the stolen credit cards were fraudulently used to purchase items.
 
Damage to the homes is estimated at $10,000.00.
 
Stewart James DUNCAN 42 years of Winnipeg has been charged with the following offences for his alleged involvement:

  • Break Enter & Commit –Dwelling House x 15
  • Fraud Under $5000 x 2

Brady Elizabeth Kara LAVERDURE 25 years has been charged with the following offences for her alleged involvement:

  • Break Enter & Commit –Dwelling House x 15
  • Fraud Under $5000 x 2
  • Resist Peace Officer
  • Carry Firearm, Weapon, Prohibited Device or Ammunition in a Careless Manner
  • Possession of Break In Instruments

Both were detained at the Provincial Remand Centre.
 
 
CDSA SEARCH WARRANT ARRESTS – C14-36392
Members of the East District Community Support Unit recently became involved in a drug investigation regarding a residence in the 200 block of Kimberly Avenue.  As a result of the investigation a Controlled Drugs and Substances (CDSA) Search Warrant was obtained.
 
On February 19, 2014, with the assistance of uniform members, the Tactical Support Team and the National Weapons Enforcement Team (NWEST), the warrant was executed.  Three people within the residence were arrested without incident.  A search of the home resulted in the seizure of the following:

  • Maverick Model 88 – 12 gauge pump action sawed off shotgun
  • Cooey Model 60 - .22 calibre bolt action loaded rifle with serial # removed.
  • 2 sawed off butt stocks and 1 sawed off shotgun barrel
  • Several .22 calibre and 12 gauge shot gun shells
  • $1205.00 in Canadian Currency
  • 1 ounce of cannabis resin oil with a street value of $700.00
  • 44 MDMA pills with estimated street value of $440.00
  • 22.7g powder cocaine with estimated street value of $1760.00
  • 13.6g crack cocaine with estimate street value of $1120.00
  • 118 grams of marihuana with estimate street value of $1180.00
  • Packaging material, scale and 7 cell phones

Dylan Durkvar SOUTH 20 years & Stefan John STONE-LACROIX 23 years, both of Winnipeg, have been charged with numerous drug and weapons related offences for their alleged involvement.  Both were detained at the Provincial Remand Centre.
 
A 17 year old female from Winnipeg is facing several drug and weapons related charges for her alleged involvement.  She was released via a Promise to Appear.
