WINNIPEG POLICE SERVICE DOWNTOWN SAFETY STRATEGY

During the evening hours on Monday, August 13th, 2012, Winnipeg Police Service members were monitoring traffic entering the downtown area from the Sherbrook Bridge. A motorist was observed operating his vehicle northbound at 112km/hour in a 50km/h zone. The driver's actions put not only himself, but the occupant and members of the public at risk. Officers safely stopped the vehicle at which time a Provincial Offence Notice was issued.

In the immediate vicinity of this location, there are several community facilities including; the Misericordia Urgent Care Centre, the Cornish Library and the Mulvey School.

The Service continues to pursue the Action Items listed in its 2012-2014 Strategic Plan and the development of the Downtown Safety Strategy is well underway.  Of particular importance is the safety of all those who walk, bike and drive through the downtown area.

The goal of the Downtown Safety Strategy is as follows:

  • Improve police presence in the downtown area-this will enhance the safety and perceived safety to the citizens of Winnipeg, and promote the central business district as a growing and dynamic destination in which to visit, take up residence and invest.

In order to achieve this goal, public education must continue and culture change must occur. Culture change starts with public acceptance that dangerous actions will not be tolerated.

We are approaching another season where we expect to see an increased number of residents and visitors congregating in the downtown sports, hospitality and entertainment district. Traffic safety will be but one of many different components of the Downtown Safety Strategy and the public will be updated as new components are added. The Winnipeg Police Service urges everyone to use caution when travelling in and through our downtown.
