Winnipeg Police Service News Release

 

  Sunday, March 25th, 2012
 

HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION- UPDATE           C12-53287
As previously released, on Saturday, March 24th, 2012 at approximately 10:50 a.m. Winnipeg Police Service Division 13 uniform members were dispatched to an apartment complex within the 1200 block of Jefferson Avenue to check on the well-being of a resident. 
 
Upon arrival officers entered the secured suite and located two deceased individuals. 
 
The investigation which is being treated as a domestic related incident, has revealed that the 28 year old female victim had sustained stab wounds to her upper body while the 32 year old male had self-inflicted injuries.  
 
Efforts to notify next of kin are continuing and therefore names will not be released at this time. 
 
The investigation is on going by members of the Identification Unit and the Homicide Unit.

 
FATAL MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISION INVOLVING A PEDESTRIAN – ARREST            C11-256942
As previously released, on December 11th, 2011, at approximately 11:10 a.m., emergency services responders were dispatched to the intersection of Portage Avenue and Maryland Street for reports of a motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian. 
 
The investigation revealed that a 66 year old male pedestrian was walking northbound on Maryland Street when he attempted to cross eastbound Portage Avenue and was struck by a southbound vehicle (Hyundai Elantra).  The male was transported to hospital in critical condition where he succumbed to his injuries. 
 
On March 24th, 2011, as a result of a lengthy investigation led by members of the Central Traffic Unit, the 56 year old male driver was arrested and has been released to appear in court at a later date.
 
He is facing one charge under the Highway Traffic Act of Drive Careless Cause Death.    
 
 
FIRE INVESTIGATION                      C12-53776
On Sunday, March 25th, 2012 just after 3:00 a.m. emergency services responders were dispatched to a residence within the 800 block of Flora Avenue for a report of fire.
 
Fire fighters worked quickly to extinguish the fire, which caused approximately $150,000 in damages. 
 
There were no reported injuries.
 
At this stage in the investigation the cause of the fire is believed to be suspicious in nature. 
 
This investigation is continuing by members of the Arson Strike Force Unit.
