PUBLIC ADVISORY – EMERGENCY OR GRANDPARENT SCAM
Since June 2013, the Winnipeg Police Service Commercial Crime Unit has seen an increase in the number of reports of the "Emergency or Grandparent Scam". The basic scam involves the suspect(s) calling an elderly grandparent, claiming to be his or her grandchild or family member. The suspect(s) claim that they are in jail, or have some other critical emergency, and need money wired to his or her location. In almost all cases, the victim is encouraged not to say anything to anyone and to keep it a secret.
The financial losses suffered by the elderly victims as a result of these scams, is substantial, often in the range of several thousand dollars. In a recent case, an elderly couple had used a money transfer service to send $19,000.00 to help a friend, who was later found to be fine.
The Commercial Crime Unit encourages all care providers, children and grandchildren to discuss this scam with their elderly family members or those individuals who they feel may be susceptible to these pressure tactics.

PUBLIC AWARENESS- GARAGE BREAK AND ENTERS
As a result of an increase in the number of reports of garage break-ins, the Winnipeg Police Service would like to remind citizens to ensure that their properties are secure at all times. Thefts from garages and unsecured vehicles have occurred in all areas of our city.
Members of the public are requested to refrain from leaving garage door openers in their vehicle and to ensure that their vehicles and garage doors are secured. This one simple step of prevention can often reduce these crimes of opportunity.
