FRAUD ARREST C13-169384
On August 23, 2013 at approximately 11:00 a.m., Winnipeg Police Service Uniform Members were called to a restaurant within the 1400 block of McPhillips Street for a report of a theft of a debit machine.  Upon arrival officers apprehended a male suspect after a short foot pursuit, while two additional male suspects remain at large.
 
Members of the Commercial Crime Unit continued with the investigation.  It was determined that the male in custody is part of a group involved in stealing credit card data through skimming.
 
The investigation has revealed that at closing time on August 22, 2013, three males attended to the previously mentioned restaurant and distracted the clerk for the purpose of stealing the point of sale terminal (POS) and replacing it with a non-functioning one.  Overnight they modified the stolen POS to include components that record debit and credit card information. 
 
On August 23, the group returned at opening and while in the act of replacing the POS terminal, they were discovered and fled.  With assistance from citizens in the area, one male was apprehended and arrested by officers.  The other two suspects fled on foot. 
 
District 3 members located a vehicle associated to the group.  A search warrant was obtained and the dummy POS terminal was found in the car.
 
As a result of his alleged involvement, Elia YAZIGI, 21 years of Quebec has been charged with: Theft Under $5000 and Possess Instruments for Forging Credit Cards.
 
He was detained.  
 
 
MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISION C13-172215
On August 27, 2013 at approximately 3:50 a.m., emergency personnel responded to a serious motor vehicle collision involving a motorcycle near the intersection of Main Street and Bannatyne Avenue.
The 20 year-old male operator of the motorcycle was transported in critical condition and later upgraded to stable.
 
The investigation has revealed that male had been travelling northbound on Main Street when he lost control of the bike. It was at this time the median was struck and the driver was separated from the bike.
 
Speed is being considered as a contributing factor.
 
Members of the Central Traffic Unit continue to investigate.
 
Anyone who may have observed the incident or the events leading up to collision is asked to contact investigators at 204-986-6271.
 
 
ASSAULT PEACE OFFICER – ARREST C13-170183
On August 24, 2013 at approximately 11:20 a.m., a Winnipeg Police Service Traffic Unit conducted a traffic stop involving an off-road vehicle being operated in the area of McGillvray Boulevard and Road #7 East in the RM of McDonald.
 
After making contact, the driver became un-cooperative regarding his identity at which he was placed under arrest.    
 
It was at this time the driver suddenly accelerated his ATV striking the officer. As a result of the incident, the officer was dragged approximately 15 feet causing non-life-threatening injuries.
 
The male was eventually located and arrested nearby.
 
A 25 year-old male is facing the following charges:
 
Assault Peace Officer
Flight from Police
Escape Lawful Custody
Off Road Vehicle 21(c) – Fail to display a valid registration plate and sticker
Off Road Vehicle – 21 (c) – Operate or permit the operation of an Uninsured ORV
Fail to wear a helmet
Operate an ORV carelessly
 
He was released on a Promise to Appear.
