Many of you are aware that the Homicide Unit is investigating a serious attack on a teenager along the river-walk of the Assiniboine River on Friday evening.

With the permission of the victim's parents we are identifying the victim as Rinelle Harper. Rinelle is 16 years old, and is from the community of God's Lake Narrows. She currently resides in Winnipeg along with her family while attending school.

Police are seeking the public's assistance for any information that will help investigators solve this crime and bring Rinelle's attacker to justice.

  • Investigators know that Rinelle was out with friends on Friday evening in the South Broadway area of the city.
  • Investigators know that Rinelle was attacked along the river-walk next to the Assiniboine River near the Donald Street Bridge.
  • It is believed the attack was sexual in nature.
  • Investigators believe that Rinelle ended up in the frigid waters of the Assiniboine River after the assault.
  • Rinelle's unconscious body was discovered by a passerby a short time later along the river-walk. She was rushed to hospital in critical condition.

At this point it appears that Rinelle Harper will recover from the attack and ordeal she underwent.

Police are appealing to the public for assistance from anyone who may have seen Rinelle Friday evening in the hours and minutes leading up to her attack; or from anyone with knowledge of the attack on Rinelle.
