Update - Homicide Arrest - C17-31797
   
Male Charged - Second Degree Murder:
   
As previously released -On February 14, 2017, at approximately 1:55 a.m., Winnipeg Police responded to a report of a Weapon incident at the intersection of Dafoe Road West and Gillson Street.  The initial information received was that a City of Winnipeg Bus Operator had been assaulted by a lone passenger while he was stopped at the end of his route.
   
The initial officers on scene located the bus operator who was suffering from serious stab wounds. The victim, Irvine J. FRASER, a 58 year old male, was conveyed to hospital in critical condition, but has succumbed to his injuries.
   
Led by canine, responding officers were able to locate a suspect on the frozen Red River between Freedman Crescent to the north and Marine Drive to the south.The male suspect was arrested and brought to the river bank.
   
The canine officer returned alone to the ice to continue the investigation at which time he fell through the ice. General Patrol officers were able to get a rope to the canine officer and pull him to safety. The officer was not injured.
   
The investigation continued by members of the Major Crimes Unit with the assistance of the Forensic Identification Section.
   
Brian Kyle THOMAS, 22 years old has been charged with Second Degree Murder, Possession of a Weapon and Fail to Comply with a Probation Order due to his alleged involvement.
   
The investigation has revealed that FRASER advised the lone male occupant of the bus, THOMAS, to exit, as it was the end of the line.
   
THOMAS attended to the front of the bus and indicated that he did not wish to exit at this time. After repeated requests by FRASER, the occupant was escorted off.
   
A verbal argument continued resulting in a physical altercation outside the bus when a knife was produced and FRASER was stabbed multiple times in the upper body.
   
FRASER collapsed and THOMAS fled the immediate area on foot.
   
THOMAS was arrested nearby on the frozen Red River and taken into custody due to the efforts of the Canine Unit, general patrol and cadets.
   
He has been remanded into custody.
