Winnipeg Police Service – Canada Day Overview
The Winnipeg Police Service experienced an extremely busy period during Canada Day.
Some, but not all the incidents were specifically related to Canada Day celebrations. At this time many of the incidents are still being investigated and full details are not yet available.
Additional manpower and resources were deployed during the evening in anticipation of the potential for increased demand for police services. All calls for service were prioritized according to established service protocols and officers were able to respond to all major incidents.
Between 7:30 p.m. July 1, and 1:30 a.m. July 2, the Winnipeg Police Service received reports of seven people who had been stabbed in five separate incidents.
- C17-144586: At approximately 7:30 p.m., Winnipeg Police received a report of an 18-year-old male stabbed near the skate park at the Forks. The victim was initially transported to hospital in unstable condition but has since been upgraded to stable. A 19-year-old male has been charged with Assault with a Weapon and other offences. He was detained in custody.
- C17-144725: At approximately 12:15 a.m., patrolling officers came across a large fight that had erupted at St. Mary Avenue and Smith Street at a block party. Three victims have been treated for stab wounds.
- C17-144752: At approximately 12:45 a.m., emergency services personnel responded to the area of Arlington Street and Flora Avenue for the report of a female who had been stabbed. The preliminary investigation indicates that this injury was likely the result of a robbery. The 21-year-old female victim is in stable condition.
- C17-144785: At approximately 1:30 a.m., emergency services personnel responded to the report of a female who had been stabbed in the 500 block of Sherbrook St. A 22-year-old female victim was transported in unstable condition.
- C17-144787: At approximately 1:30 a.m., a male in his twenties attended to a hospital emergency room suffering from a stab wound. The police investigation revealed that this injury had been sustained during a large fight had occurred shortly before this at the intersection of Main Street and Pioneer Avenue. The victim is believed to be in stable condition.
Assault Police Officer – Arrest: C17-144231
On July 1, 2017, at approximately 6:30 a.m., West District General Patrol units responded to a suspicious incident in the 1000 block of King Edward Street. A male was observed on the roof of a business and acting in an erratic manner before leaving the area.
The male was located at a nearby business with injuries to his hands and upper body.
Concerned for his well-being, officers approached the male who immediately became aggressive and combative. He attempted to fight officers and after a physical struggle a Conducted Electrical Weapon ("TASER") was used to take the suspect into custody. A search of the male revealed a knife hidden in his clothing.
A female officer received a minor injury during the encounter and did not require medical assistance.
A 21-year-old male of Winnipeg has been arrested for:
- Causing a Disturbance
- Resist Peace Officer
- Assault a Peace Officer
- Possession of a Weapon
He was released on a Promise to Appear.
Motor Vehicle Collision involving a Cadet: C17-144724
On July 1, 2017, at approximately 11:30 p.m., after The Forks' Canada Day celebrations, Winnipeg Police Service Cadets were directing traffic in the area of Broadway and Main Street.
At this time, a 31-year-old female driver was instructed by a Cadet to remain stopped for heavy pedestrian traffic leaving the area. The driver became belligerent and refused the Cadet's instructions. She quickly accelerated the vehicle and made contact with the Cadet, causing injuries to his arm.
The suspect continued to drive away and was apprehended a short distance away by police.
A 31-year-old female of Winnipeg has been arrested for:
- Dangerous Operation of Motor Vehicle – Cause Bodily Harm
- Fail to Obey a Peace Officer's Directions (Highway Traffic Act)
- Fail to remain at the scene of an accident and exchange particulars (Highway Traffic Act)
She was released on an Appear Notice.
Commercial Break & Enter – Arrest: C17-144827
On July 2, 2017, at approximately 2:30 a.m., a Downtown General Patrol unit was patrolling in the 400 block of Carlton Street when they observed an individual attempting to pry open the rear door of a business.
The suspect was placed under arrest and found to be in possession of a tire iron.
Christina Elizabeth Margaret Baptiste, a 20-year-old female of Winnipeg, has been charged with:
- Break & Enter with Intent - Place
- Possession of Break In Instrument(s)
- Fail to Comply Condition Recognizance by Judge/Justice (x2)
- Fail to Comply with Probation Order
She was detained in custody.
