Stabbing – Update/Arrest: C17-238424
As previously released on October 21, 2017:
On October 21, 2017, at approximately 4:30 a.m., emergency personnel responded to a residence in the 600 block of Pritchard Avenue for a report of a male who had been stabbed.
Upon arrival, officers located an injured adult male. The victim, a 25-year-old male of Winnipeg, was transported to hospital in critical condition and was later upgraded to stable condition.
Members of the Major Crimes Unit continued with the investigation and determined that the victim had been outside the residence when a verbal dispute with a male escalated into an assault. The victim was then stabbed several times in the upper body by the male before fleeing the scene.
On October 22, 2017, at approximately 11:10 p.m., the suspect was located at a residence in the 700 block of Stella Avenue and placed under arrest.
Nolan Richard Laporte, a 26-year-old male of Winnipeg, has been charged with:
- Aggravated Assault
- Possession of a Weapon
- Fail to Comply with Probation Order (x2).
He was detained in custody.
Homicide – Update: C17-238151
As previously released on October 21, 2017:
On October 20, 2017, at approximately 10:45 p.m., emergency personnel responded to a residence in the 700 block of Sherbrook Street for the report of a male who had been shot.
Upon arrival, officers located an injured adult male. The victim was transported to hospital in critical condition and was pronounced deceased a short time later.
The victim has been identified as John Tuil Jok, a 29-year-old male of Winnipeg.
This investigation is continuing by members of the Homicide Unit. Anyone with information that may assist investigators is asked to call 204-986-6508 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).
Personating Peace Officer – Arrest: R17-84333
As previously released on September 14, 2017:
During March 2017, members of the Major Crimes Unit began an investigation into an adult male who was believed to be falsely representing himself as a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and part of their dive team.
An investigation revealed that the male had been using social media to communicate with a number of police and scuba driver groups. During these communications, the male would often portray himself as an experienced member of the RCMP and engage in discussions with unsuspecting victims.
On September 13, 2017, the suspect was located at a residence in the 500 block of Manitoba Avenue and placed under arrest.
Thomas David Hanaway, a 59-year-old male of Winnipeg, has been charged with:
- Personating Peace Officer
- Fail to Comply with Probation Order (x3)
He was detained in custody.
Members of the Major Crimes Unit began a second investigation after receiving complaints that the suspect male was continuing to personate both an active member and a retired member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police between September 14, 2017, and October 22, 2017.
On October 22, 2017, the suspect was located at a residence in the 500 block of Manitoba Avenue and placed under arrest.
Thomas David Hanaway, a 59-year-old male of Winnipeg, has been charged with:
- Personating Peace Officer (x2)
- Fail to Comply with Probation Order (x2)
He was again detained in custody.
Weapons/Flight from Police – Arrest: C17-239264
On October 22, 2017, at approximately 5 a.m., members of Division 11 General Patrol observed a stolen vehicle being operated in the area of Sargent Avenue and Young Street.
Officers followed the vehicle, and with the assistance of a second cruiser car, attempted to stop the vehicle on Bannatyne Avenue near Tecumseh Street by activating their lights and siren.
At this time, the driver manoeuvred the stolen vehicle around the cruiser cars by driving up on a boulevard and over the front yards of a number of residences before fleeing the area.
At approximately 5:15 a.m., officers located the vehicle abandoned in the 1300 block of Ross Avenue. Members of the K9 unit attended the scene and tracked to a suspect hiding in a yard in the 1400 block of Ross Avenue.
The male was found to be in possession of a can of bear spray, a key for the stolen vehicle and backpack containing 22.8 grams of Marijuana, a scale and drug-related packaging materials.
He was also found to be the subject of an arrest warrant for the suspension of his statutory release.
Orrin Lawrence Spence, a 27-year-old male of Winnipeg, has been charged with:
- Dangerous Operation of Motor Vehicle
- Flight while Pursued by Peace Officer
- Possession of a Weapon
- Unauthorized Possession of a Prohibited or Restricted Weapon
- Carrying Concealed Weapon Prohibited Device or Ammunition
- Possession of a Scheduled Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking - Marijuana
- Possession of Property Obtained by Crime over $5,000
He was detained in custody.
Robbery – Investigation: C17-239342
On October 22, 2017, at approximately 10:00 a.m. an adult female contacted the Winnipeg Police Service advising she has been robbed. General Patrol members attended to the 500 block of Sargent Ave. and met with the victim. She advised that she was approached by three unknown males who grabbed her purse from her shoulder and then stole a second purse from a vehicle, which she was standing next to. The victim chased the males, one of which produced a knife and punched the victim in the face. With the assistance of two citizens, the victim was able to recover both purses.
The victim sustained minor injuries as a result of the attack.
Two of the suspects are described as Caucasian, approximately 40-years-old and 5'9" - 6' in height with a heavy build.

Assault – Investigation: C17-239450
On October 22, 2017, at approximately 1:20 p.m. the Winnipeg Police Service received a call advising that two people had been assaulted in the 400 block of Nairn Ave. General Patrol and Tactical Support Team members attended and located two adult males with injuries. One male with upper body injuries was transported to hospital in stable condition, a second male, with an injury to his midsection was transported to hospital in unstable condition.
The first male was been treated and released from hospital. He is currently in police custody. The second male remains in hospital in stable condition.
