Boating Accident: C18-91996

On May 4, 2018, at approximately 11:15 p.m. the Winnipeg Police Service was advised that a boat capsized on the Red River in the area of Chief Peguis Trail Bridge. Officers attended the area and learned that three adult males were able to safely make it shore, however one male remained unaccounted for. All three males were taken to hospital; two in stable condition and one in unstable condition.

Air1 and General Patrol Officers along with members of the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service and their Water Rescue Team conducted an extensive search from Chief Peguis Trail Bridge to Lockport, Manitoba. They were unable to locate the missing male or the boat.

The operator of the boat, a 24-year-old male, was found to be intoxicated. He has been arrested for Impaired Driving While Ability Impaired Causing Death, Driving While Ability Impaired, and Causing Death by Criminal Negligence. He was released on a Promise to Appear.

Investigators are seeking the assistance of anyone who may have had contact with these males in the area of the docks around The Forks earlier in the evening, or anyone who may have video footage of this boat on the water before the time of the accident.

The investigation is continuing by members of the Traffic Division. Anyone with information that may assist investigators is asked to call 204-986-7085 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).
