STATUS4 - 2012 LAUNCH

As part of an ongoing approach under the City of Winnipeg LiveSafe –Crime Prevention Policy; Winnipeg Police Service and the Community Services Department have partnered with Status4 Inc. to provide programs and services for children, youth and families in the Elmwood community of Winnipeg.

In 2006, Kevin Gibson, a constable with the Winnipeg Police Service, began looking for new ways to inspire young people to live healthy lives free of crime. Kevin's commitment and dedication to helping young people live healthy lives was the impetus for Status4.
Status4 Inc. began in the Fall of 2011 at the East End Cultural and Leisure Centre located at 575 Larsen Avenue. Status4 Inc. provides free after-school music, arts programs and taekwondo in the Elmwood Community for youth without access or opportunity due to social and economic barriers.
This initiative was made possible with partnerships and support from the Winnipeg Police Service, Community Services and other Civic Departments, Province of Manitoba, corporate contributions and community support as well as the volunteers that make up the Status4 Team.
The City of Winnipeg is contributing $85,000 of in-kind support to this initiative.
The province, through Neighbourhoods Alive!, has provided $28,000 towards launching Status4 in the neighbourhood of Chalmers.
"We are pleased to help Status4 provide an innovative, proactive approach towards safety with a strong emphasis on positive skill-building recreation opportunities for youth," said Housing and Community Development Minister Kerri Irvin-Ross. "When youth have more opportunities for growth in positive environments the entire community will benefit."
"In my time as Mayor, I have heard so many times that all it takes is one mentor to completely change a young person's life," said Mayor Sam Katz. "Kevin, along with all of the other mentors involved with Status4, will no doubt make a tangible difference in this community."
"Status4 is a testament of what happens when communities and organizations work together as a collective team to create initiatives that will enhance the lives of families while creating safer communities", said Keith McCaskill, Chief of Winnipeg Police Service.

"The wide range of recreational opportunities that Status4 will be providing for children and youth in Elmwood is extremely exciting and the Community Services Department is pleased to be an active partner in these efforts", said Clive Wightman, Director of Community Services.
In addition to the strong working relationship with community organizations; Status4 Inc. has benefitted from effective partnerships with area Councillor Thomas Steen, MLA Jim Maloway, Elmwood High School, Neighborhoods Alive! and corporate supports such as Roland Canada (Richmond, BC), Mar-Schell's Music and Palliser Furniture.
