Sudden Death Investigation – C15-11440
On January 17, 2015 at approximately 1:10 a.m., officers responded to a home located in the 100 block of Lorne Avenue regarding an unresponsive female.
 
At this stage of the investigation, it appears that a female was involved in an altercation resulting in a serious injury. She became unresponsive and emergency personnel were notified.
 
An 18 year-old female victim was transported to hospital in critical condition where she later succumbed to her injuries.
 
Members of the Homicide Unit were notified and continue to investigate. No arrest(s) have been made at this time.
 
Interviews are on-going. An autopsy is pending.

Vehicle Pursuit Arrest – C15-11126
On January 16, 2015 at approximately 2:25 p.m., officers observed a Dodge Caravan being operated at a high rate of speed eastbound on McDermot Avenue while in a school zone. 
 
Officers attempted to stop the vehicle however, the driver fled southbound on Juno Street. A pursuit was initiated but later aborted due to the unsafe manner of driving by the suspect and heavy vehicle and pedestrian traffic at that time.
 
The driver was observed to disobey numerous traffic control devices and reach excessive rates of speed having no regard for public safety.
 
The driver became involved in a multi-vehicle collision in the area of Ellice Avenue and Donald Street. A female suspect was taken into custody at that time. Officers confirmed that the vehicle had previously been stolen from the 300 block of Partridge Avenue.
 
Santana Cheyanne MECAS, 23 years-old of Winnipeg has been charged with the following due to her alleged involvement:
 
Dangerous operation of motor vehicle
Flight while pursued by peace officer
Theft of motor vehicle
HTA – Fail to remain at the scene of an accident and exchange particulars x 2
HTA – Drive while disqualified x 2
HTA – Speeding
 
She was remanded into custody.
 
 
Stolen Vehicle Arrest – C15-08400
On January 16, 2015 at approximately 11:50 p.m., two male suspects were observed occupying a stolen Chevrolet Optra in the area of Main Street and Flora Avenue.
 
After observing police, the driver fled at a high rate of speed. After a brief pursuit, the driver abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot while in the area of Granville Street. The passenger remained on scene and was taken into custody without further incident.
 
Members of the Canine Unit also responded. The suspect was tracked to the rear yard of a residence on Hallet Street. As a result, the driver was taken into custody.
 
Robert Christopher SAUER, 23 years-old of Winnipeg has been charged with the following due to his alleged involvement:
 
Possession of property obtained by crime
Flight while pursued by peace officer
Fail to comply with probation order
 
He was remanded into custody.
 
The adult male passenger was not charged.
 
 
Weapons Arrests – C15-10199
On January 14, 2015 members of the Winnipeg Police Service Street Crime Unit became involved in a firearms investigation.  As a result, a search warrant was obtained for a residence in the 300 block of Redwood Avenue.
 
On January 15th the warrant was executed with the assistance of Community Support Unit members from Division 11, 13, West District (14) and the Tactical Support Team.  A search of the property resulted in the seizure of the following:
 

  • 37 grams of marihuana with an estimated street value of $400.00
  • Bear spray
  • SKS 7.62 x 39 calibre semi-automatic rifle
  • Sawed off 30-06 bolt action rifle
  • Sawed off .303 bolt action rifle

 
Three people were arrested without incident.
 
Justin Walter Allen THAYER (21) and Terry Angus THAYER (61), both of Winnipeg,have been charged with numerous firearms related offences for their alleged involvement.  They were remained into custody.
 
A 23-year-old female of Winnipegis also facing a charge of Possession of a Scheduled Substance – CANNABIS (MARIHUANA).
 
She was released on a promise to appear.
