Assault Peace Officer Arrest – C15-734
On January 1, 2015 shortly before 11:00 p.m. uniform members of the Winnipeg Police Service were on patrol in the 500 block of Home Street where they observed a running vehicle with two occupants.  Upon seeing the police cruiser, the driver fled at a high rate of speed.
 
Officers activated their emergency equipment however the vehicle would not stop.  AIR1 members quickly located the vehicle, allowing assigned units to follow in a safe manner.  Attempts to stop the vehicle with the use of stop sticks were unsuccessful.  At one point, while the vehicle was travelling north on Quelch Street between Alexander and Logan, the driver purposely collided with a marked cruiser and then drove off.  One of the two officers in the cruiser suffered minor injuries as a result of the collision.
 
The vehicle was eventually stopped in the 1800 block of Burrows Avenue at which time the driver and passenger were taken into custody without further incident.
 
Brian BUCHANAN, 43 years of Winnipeg has been charged with the following offences for his alleged involvement:

  • Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle Cause Bodily Harm
  • Flight while Pursued by Peace Officer
  • Assault a Peace Officer x 2
  • Fail to Comply with Probation Order
  • Fail to Comply with Conditions of Undertaking Given by Officer in Charge
  • Drive without motor vehicle liability insurance
  • Fail to Stop at Scene of Accident
  • Disobey Traffic Control Device

He was detained in custody.
 
The 40-year-old female passenger was released without charge.
