Motor Vehicle Collision – Investigation: C17-267530
On November 27, 2017, at approximately 8:25 p.m., members of the West District Community Support Unit were in the area of Portage Avenue and Edmonton Street when they observed a 34-year-old male exit a business on the north side of the street and run southbound into traffic. The male was struck by a vehicle that was travelling eastbound.
Officers immediately attended to the injured male who was transported to hospital in critical condition where he remains.
This investigation is continuing by members of the Traffic Division. Anyone with information that may assist investigators is asked to call 204-986-6271 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).
Garage Break & Enters – Arrest: C17-267332
On November 27, 2017, at approximately 4:15 p.m., East District General Patrol members observed a male driving a stolen Ford F-150 in the area of Keenleyside Street and Pike Crescent. The driver stopped the truck and quickly exited when he was placed under arrest. Officers located a stolen bicycle and airsoft pellet gun in the bed of the truck.
Members of the Major Crimes Unit continued with the investigation and determined the suspect was responsible for breaking into a number of garages in the North End and Elmwood-East Kildonan areas between November 22 and November 27, 2017. The suspect is believed to have gained entry to the garages by damaging man doors or garage doors (and some occasions using a stolen vehicle to cause the damage).
The following break-ins were identified:
- A garage in the 100 block of McAdam Avenue where a mountain bicycle worth approximately $2,200 was stolen.
- A garage in the 500 block of Polson Avenue where numerous tools were stolen.
- A garage in the 700 block of Polson Avenue where the suspect defecated on the garage floor prior to fleeing.
- A garage in the 500 block of McAdam Avenue where a mountain bicycle worth approximately $2,000 was stolen.
- A garage in the 600 block of St. Johns Avenue. Nothing was stolen.
- A garage in the 1600 block of Arlington Street where two trucks were stolen. Both vehicles were later located.
- A garage in the 600 block of Lansdowne Avenue where the F-150 was stolen.
- A garage in the 600 block of Bannerman Avenue where the stolen F-150 was used to back into the overhead garage door in an attempt to gain entry, causing approximately $1,000 in damages. Nothing was stolen.
- A garage in the 700 block of Polson Avenue where the stolen F-150 was used to back into the overhead garage door in an attempt to gain entry, causing approximately $3,000 in damages. Nothing was stolen.
- A garage in the 1200 block of Pritchard Avenue where the stolen F-150 was used to back into the overhead garage door in an attempt to gain entry, causing approximately $2,000 in damages. A dash camera, tools and two bicycles were stolen.
- A garage in the 400 block of Rupertsland Avenue where the stolen F-150 was used to back into the overhead garage door in an attempt to gain entry, causing approximately $1,000 in damages. Sunglasses and tools were stolen.
- A garage in the 800 block of Chalmers Avenue where the stolen F-150 was used to back into the overhead garage door in an attempt to gain entry, causing approximately $2,000 in damages. Nothing was stolen.
- A garage in the first 100 block of Pike Crescent. Nothing was stolen.
The bicycle that was found in the rear of the stolen truck was determined to have been taken from a business in the 800 block of Main Street on July 28, 2017.
Investigators also have identified an incident from June 4, 2017, where the suspect attended an apartment building in the 200 block of McGregor Street and stole a number of electronics from a recreational area. A number of Ukrainian artifacts were also broken.
Chase James Swampy, a 20-year-old male of Winnipeg, has been charged with:
- Break Enter & Theft - Place (x10)
- Break & Enter with Intent - Place (x5)
- Theft of Motor Vehicle (x3)
- Possession of Property Obtained by Crime under $5,000
- Possession of a Weapon
- Fail to Comply with Probation Order (x14)
He was detained in custody.
Utter Threats - Arrest: C17-266710
On November 26, 2017 an adult female contacted Winnipeg Police and advised that her son was receiving threats over social media. The threats were in the form of written messages, voice messages, photos and video.
Members of the Major Crimes Unit followed up. On November 27, 2017, Ryan Matthew Hamm, 19 -years-old of Winnipeg has been charged with Uttering Threats Cause Death or Harm, Possession of a Weapon and Fail to Comply Condition Recognizance.
