AIR1 – Forward Looking Infrared Camera
On December 6, 2010, the Winnipeg Police Service unveiled the EC120 helicopter, now known to the public as AIR1.  At that time, the helicopter was equipped with the latest equipment, including a Forward Looking Infrared (FLIR) camera, used to track people or evidence by heat signature.  This ability has played a crucial role in members being able to not only locate and arrest those involved in criminal activity, but to also assist in the rescue of persons who find themselves in dangerous situations.

Now five years on, the camera has come to the end of its life cycle.  The current unit has needed on-going repairs, which hinders the ability of the helicopter, and has limited flight times.

The camera is an integral part of AIR1 and without one, its ability to operate at its full potential is greatly diminished.

The WPS is in discussions with the province to partner on the purchase of this important equipment.  We thank them for their support with this program.
